Green Buyers

Green Buyer Questionnaire

There are many decisions a Green Buyer needs to make before we start looking for the perfect Green Home. When I interview my new clients we discuss many aspects of their green priorities. Their answers lead me to more questions and some answers as well as helpful information. This questionnaire is only a starting point and does not in any way substitute for an interview.

  • What are you top green priorities, energy efficiency, water efficiency, indoor air quality, the carbon footprint of the materials used, durability and low maintenance, sustainability of materials used, etc.?
  • How soon do you want to buy or build your home?
  • Will you be paying cash or have you been pre-approved for the amount you need for your home purchase?
  • How long do you plan to live in this home?
  • Which area best serves your needs: a shorter work day commute, access the schools of choice if you have children, the option to walk or bike to certain destinations etc.?
  • How familiar are you with the green building principles that work best in our Hot and Humid climate?
  • Which spaces do you need in your home such as numbers of bedrooms, bathrooms, home office, style of living and dining spaces, kitchen preferences etc.?
  • Is anyone in the family suffering from respiratory issues or is sensitive to the off gassing of certain substances such as paints and finishes?
  • Do you need to sell your current home before you can purchase your new home?
  • By what date do you need to be settled in your new home?

Buying A New or Existing Home?

For many of us with very demanding careers and lifestyles a turnkey, brand new green rated home is a perfect match. In addition, if that home is part of a green community such as Mueller which is soon to earn its LEED for Neighborhoods designation, all the better! I have served buyers who chose to live in this community since 2007 and am familiar with the many options available.

Most buyers choose an existing home, rather than a new or custom home. The majority of our existing housing stock is in need of “green” updates. From the point of view of the three basic environmental benchmarks: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, purchasing an existing home and “greening” it could be, not only the best choice for you but also for the environment.

It could be the best choice for you because it allows you to choose a neighborhood, school district and price point that may not offer any pre-existing Green Built homes. Also, the green value of urban (or suburban infill for that matter) is served by re-greening existing housing stock.

A great resource on this option has been developed by a joint effort of the ASID and the USGBC called REGREEN Guidelines - Download Here.
